Add Optional Line Items to Quotes
Offer customers upgrade options and add-ons by marking line items as optional so they can choose what to include.
What this guide covers
This guide explains how to add optional line items to quotes in JobsiteOn. You will learn how to mark items as optional, how they appear on the proposal, and how customers interact with them when reviewing your quote.
What are optional line items
Optional line items are services or products included in your proposal that the customer can choose to accept or decline. They are not included in the quote total by default but appear as available upgrades or add-ons.
Common examples:
- Premium materials as an upgrade to standard options.
- Extended warranty or maintenance plans.
- Additional scope items the customer expressed interest in but did not commit to.
Adding an optional line item
- Open the quote builder at
/quotes/[slug]in edit mode or create a new quote at/quotes/new. - Add a line item using Add from Pricebook or Add Line Item.
- After the item appears in the list, toggle the Optional switch on that row.
- The item is now marked as optional and excluded from the quote total.

How optional items appear on the proposal
On the customer-facing proposal PDF and portal view:
- Optional items appear in a separate section labeled "Optional Items" or your custom label.
- Each optional item shows its name, description, and price.
- The quote total reflects only the required items.
- A note explains that optional items are available upon request.
Animation: The proposal PDF scrolling down past the standard line items to the optional items section, which is visually separated by a divider.
Customer interaction with optional items
When the customer views the quote in the portal at /q/[token]:
- They see the optional items listed below the standard scope.
- They can indicate interest in optional items when accepting the quote.
- You receive a notification showing which optional items the customer selected.
Tip: Use optional items strategically to upsell without making the base quote seem expensive. Customers appreciate having choices.
Converting optional items to required
If the customer decides to include an optional item:
- Open the quote in edit mode.
- Toggle off the Optional switch on the item.
- The item is now included in the quote total.
- Save and resend the updated quote.
Best practices
- Limit optional items to two or three per quote to avoid overwhelming the customer.
- Price optional items clearly so the customer can make an informed decision.
- Use optional items to showcase premium options without inflating the base price.
- Follow up with the customer about optional items after they accept the base quote.
